How to Prepare for an Internship or Co-op Interview

How to Prepare for an Internship or Co-op Interview

An interview is a chance for an employer to learn more about you—and for you to gather information on whether the role is right for you. A little preparation can help you explain what you bring to the opportunity, even if you’re still building your professional experience in the wireless, telecom and broadband industry.

Research the Employer and the Role

Review the job description and the employer’s website before the interview. Learn what the organization does, what projects or priorities it highlights, and how the role fits into its work. Then connect those details to your own interests, classes, projects, and skills.

If you’re interviewing for a wireless or digital infrastructure role, take time to understand where the position fits in the broader industry, learn about the company, its mission, and its customers.

Prepare Examples That Show What You Can Do

Think of a few examples that demonstrate skills relevant to the role, such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication, attention to detail, or learning something new. Your examples don’t have to come from a full-time job. Class projects, labs, campus jobs, volunteering, student organizations, and other activities can help demonstrate how you approach challenges, contribute to a team, and more.

A useful structure for presenting these ideas to a prospective employer is the STAR framework: briefly describe the Situation, the Task you needed to handle, the Action you took, and the Result. Practice telling each story clearly, without trying to memorize every word.

CareerOneStop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, offers a helpful guide to common interview questions and practice tips that can help you get started.

Prepare Questions to Ask

Most interviews include time for your questions. Bring a few that show you’re interested in the work and thinking about how you could contribute. For example:

  • What kinds of projects might an intern or co-op support?
  • What skills or experience would help someone succeed in this role?
  • How does the team support interns as they learn/train?
  • What are the next steps in the hiring process for this role?
  • What might the process be like if an internship/co-op has the opportunity to evolve into a larger role in the future?

PRO-TIP: Be sure to also ask about something specific you learned while researching the employer to help convey your preparation, and make the conversation feel tailored to this role.

Get Ready for the Interview Format

For an in-person interview, plan your route and aim to arrive about 10–15 minutes early. For a video interview, check your internet connection, camera, microphone, meeting link, and lighting in advance. Choose a quiet space where you can focus. Be Present, Honest, and Curious

Listen carefully, answer the question directly, and use your examples to show how you think and work. It’s okay to pause before answering or ask the interviewer to clarify a question. If you don’t have a particular experience yet, be honest and talk about how you would approach learning it.

At the end, thank the interviewer and ask what to expect next. If you’re interested in the opportunity, be sure to say so.

Follow Up After the Interview

Send a brief thank-you email soon after the interview. Thank the interviewer for their time, mention something specific from the conversation, and restate your interest in the role. CareerOneStop shares advice and a sample thank-you note.
