The Iridium Internship Program gives students the chance to support the teams driving the future of satellite communications. Interns in Systems & Mission Operations get hands-on experience with satellite mission planning, ground and space system operations, and engineering projects that support real-time operations, working alongside engineers, operations staff and leadership. The program runs 11 weeks, from May 18 to July 30, 2027, and pays $31 per hour.
Assignments are matched to each intern's academic background and interests and may include supporting real-time satellite operations and ground-system workflows; developing or updating software tools and operational procedures; conducting system analyses, simulations and engineering investigations; assisting with requirements management, documentation and technical reporting; troubleshooting and anomaly resolution for satellites, ground systems or software; and contributing to test planning, integration and validation of mission-critical systems. Interns gain exposure to Python, Java, JavaScript, MATLAB and/or Perl, Linux/Unix, JIRA, Git and Bamboo, and to satellite subsystems including attitude determination and control, power and thermal management, propulsion and RF communications.
Requirements: at least 18 years old; currently enrolled in a bachelor's or graduate degree program at an accredited institution, with systems, electrical, space systems, mechanical or industrial engineering or computer science preferred; U.S. citizenship; able to work in person at an Iridium location (Iridium's hybrid policy expects about four days per week in office). Strong work ethic, curiosity, communication skills and attention to detail are expected.
Iridium Communications operates the world's only truly global satellite voice and data network, using a constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide connectivity anywhere on Earth for government, maritime, aviation, enterprise and Internet of Things customers. Aireon, the space-based air traffic surveillance system, is now part of Iridium. The company is headquartered in McLean, Virginia, with major operations in Tempe and Chandler, Arizona, and Leesburg, Virginia. Its paid 11-week summer internship program places students in teams such as Systems & Mission Operations, working on real satellite and ground-system projects.
